Cambridge Exams - The Reception

At 17:30 on a thursday evening, me and my friend sat on very uncomfortable hard chairs in ODA. We watched Tatianka greet every single one of the guests and their families with a smile (we wondered how she managed to do that for two hours straight) and tried to capture all those dresses, tuxedos and other fancy pieces of clothing with our own eyes.

All of our fellow junior teachers and assistants were etiher checking in along with the principal or seating the children in the atre hall. Around 17:50 the teachers arrived as well, carrying presents with excitement in their faces. Energy and happiness were overflowing whole of the building and bursting out of the windows, catching onto those who were standing outside, yet waiting to be greeted and seated.

18:15 and we began. Lights go down, hum of people dies out, the violin music is replaced by thrilling silence. Us, trainees, watching from the second row right behind all of the honorable guests. Our principal, who we all knew too well, walked up on the stage, microphone in hand, smiling and beautiful sprakly dress on. Now she had all our attention and with thanking ad greeting all the sponsor, with a little bit of history of the Campridge English Language Assessment, little bit of Language and Partner history and then gave word to Mirka. Mirka is a teacher at L&P and also the leader of The Junior Teacher Programe. She introduced the whole project to the audience with us proudly standing by her side and after a very heartful speech the ceremony itself could finally begin.

The oldest were the first. Few teenagers who managed to write, complete and succeed on the level B2 climbed on the stage. Then after them B1, A2, Flyers, Movers, Starters. All far too young for their certificate level which proves the favorable outcome of L&P.

Every child, young adult, every successful candidate holding their certificate proudly stepping into the light in the middle of the stage to enjoy their 5 seconds of fame.

And then, when the sun was long set and the city went all quiet, there was the reception.

Fountains of chocolate, fruits, hamburgers, fries, potatoes, deserts, sodas and the cake, L&P ceremony equals good food and good food equals happy children. There was lots of that for maybe an hour in ODA. If ever you worked with kids, you know that nothing is more pleasing in this world, than to see them happy.

It could be quarter to nine when only frew people were left and we were sitting again, watching the quiet hall full of fallen balloons and empty glasses. Yet another year and yet another row of successul students and, of course, yet another year with the chocolate fountain. Here we are, all wondering who will stand on the podium next year. Perhaps you?

18:15 a začali sme. Svetlá zhasli, hukot ľudí utíchol, husľovú hudbu vystriedalo strhujúce ticho. My, stážisti, sledujeme z druhého radu hneď za všetkými vzácnymi hosťami. Náš riaditeľ, ktorého sme všetci až príliš dobre poznali, vyšiel na pódium s mikrofónom v ruke, s úsmevom a v krásnych sprakaných šatách. Teraz mala všetku našu pozornosť a s poďakovaním ad pozdravom všetkým sponzorom, s trochou histórie Campridge English Language Assessment, trochou

histórie Language and Partner a potom dala slovo Mirke. Mirka je učiteľkou v L&P a zároveň vedúcou programu The Junior Teacher Programe.

Každé dieťa, mladý dospelý, každý úspešný kandidát držiaci svoj certifikát hrdo vykročil do svetla uprostred pódia, aby si užil svojich 5 sekúnd slávy.

A potom, keď slnko už dávno zapadlo a mesto celé utíchlo, nasledovala recepcia.

Mohlo byť trištvrte na deväť, keď zostalo len pár ľudí a my sme opäť sedeli a sledovali tichú sálu plnú spadnutých balónov a prázdnych pohárov. Ďalší ročník a ďalší rad úspešných študentov a, samozrejme, ďalší ročník s čokoládovou fontánou. A sme tu, všetci zvedaví, kto bude stáť na pódiu budúci rok. Možno vy?
