Essay Competition 2026

for College-level Students

personal essay & a reflection

Every life contains a moment that quietly — or not so quietly — rewrites who we are.

Write a personal essay about an experience that changed you for the better. Your essay should address three dimensions of that experience:

1. The Experience: What happened? Describe the situation, event, or encounter in enough detail that a reader who was not there can fully picture it.

2. The Feeling: How did you feel during the experience as it unfolded? Were those feelings simple or conflicted? Did they surprise you?

3. The Consequence: What changed in you as a result? Consider your values, habits, relationships, goals, or the way you see the world.

Write from an honest place. This competition values authentic voice and genuine reflection over perfect grammar or elaborate vocabulary. You do not need to have travelled the world or survived a crisis — the experience you choose can be quiet, personal, and entirely your own.

500 words maximum (final draft)

Why is this essay process-focused?

Unlike traditional competitions that judge only a final submission, this competition requires students to submit two components: the final essay and a process reflection.

• Final Essay: the completed, revised essay (500 words max.)

• Process Reflection: a short response (100 words max.) in which the student describes how they approached writing and editing their essay: what they reconsidered, what they kept, and why

This structure has two key benefits:

1. Academic Integrity — The reflection requires students to speak candidly about their writing decisions in their own voice, making AI-generated or plagiarised submissions far easier to detect.

2. Educational Value — By asking students to think critically about their own process, the competition builds reflective learning skills — one of the most transferable academic skills a student can develop.

Judging Criteria

• Authenticity of voice and experience (30%)

• Depth and honesty of process reflection (25%)

• Structure and clarity of final essay (20%)

• Originality and emotional resonance (15%)

• Overall coherence between essay & reflection (10%)

A Note on Academic Integrity

Moments That Made Me is built around the belief that every student has a story worth telling — in their own words. Submissions that are plagiarised, AI-generated, or significantly altered from the student's original writing will be disqualified. The process reflection component exists precisely to celebrate authentic voices, so we encourage all participants to write honestly and from personal experience.
